The Royal is the latest cosy, rose-tinted, nostalgic vision of the '60s that never were to grace Sunday evening prime time terrestrial TV. From the same stable as Heartbeat, the best way to describe it is 'Heartbeat with Medics instead of Coppers'. All the stereotypes that we'd thought had long since disappeared are here - the crusty surgeon, the ice-cold Matron, the comic porter, the dolly-bird receptionist - all alive and well in the 21st Century. My Gran would have loved it, though. At least they've got the uniforms right.
